Best Butcher Knife: Reviews

1. Victorinox Swiss Army Butcher Knife

If you need a great butcher knife for big cuts of meat, the Swiss know how to make a good knife, as can be seen by this high-quality Victorinox Swiss Army Butcher Knife, and it’s not even that expensive all things considered.

Review

This butcher knife looks like a cross between a big butcher knife and a machete, and when a big piece of meat is involved, it really comes through. It is a full 12 inches in length, it is fairly bulky, and quite heavy too. It might not be the best for comfort or fatigue, but when it comes to handling big pieces of meat that need to be butchered fast, it is a prime choice to keep in mind. It is well-balanced, but still quite heavy, nonetheless.

The super strong, durable, and hard stainless steel blade is built to last for a long time to come, and it comes with a super sharp cutting edge too. The cutting edge here is designed to last for a long time, so it does not need to be sharpened too often. Moreover, the non-slip handle comes with finger protection, and is comfortable enough to hold as well. The Victorinox Swiss Army Butcher Knife even comes with a lifetime guarantee.

Pros

  • Great for large jobs
  • Very sharp and durable blade
  • Safe and comfortable handle

Cons

  • Heavy and bulky

2. Ontario Hickory Butcher Knife

What is nice about the Ontario Hickory Butcher Knife is that it comes at about half the price of the previous knife we looked at, but still manages to deliver a fair amount of quality. We do want to mention that this butcher knife is made in the USA, something that we greatly appreciate because American manufacturing is usually top notch.

Review

First off, the Ontario Hickory Butcher Knife comes with a really nice old hickory wood handle. It looks very nice and is durable to boot. This is a handle that allows for great performance, and its straight design makes it fairly comfortable to hold for butchering purposes. However, keep in mind that it is straight and very smooth, so it can be a bit slippery when wet.

With that being said, this is a 10-inch butcher knife that should be able to handle even the biggest of jobs with ease. The specially treated stainless steel blade is very durable and should last for quite some time. This knife also has a good cutting edge that is ideal for large cuts of meat, but be aware that you will probably have to sharpen it fairly often.

Pros

  • Really comfortable and durable handle
  • Very durable blade
  • Good for large jobs

Cons

  • Handle can be slippery
  • Needs to be sharpened regularly

3. Dexter-Russell Butcher Knife

If you need a moderately priced butcher knife that will stay sharp for a long time, this Dexter-Russell Butcher Knife might be a good option for you to go with. It does not look very special, or even very nice for that matter, but it does get the job done just fine.

Review

The Dexter-Russell Butcher Knife is a 10-inch blade butcher knife. The blade is a straight-edge blade that comes to a nice point, plus it is quite hard and stiff as well. This makes it a really great knife for cutting apart very large pieces of meat. It’s not great for trimming or boning, but for butchering large cuts, it works more than fine.

The stainless steel blade is not only very durable, but it also comes with a very sharp and narrow cutting edge which slices through meat, fat, and tendons with ease. It is also designed to stay sharp for a really long time, so minimal sharpening is required.

The knife itself is also very lightweight, which makes it ideal to use for a long period of time. However, one bone we have to pick here is that the handle is made out of cheap plastic and it’s not something that looks like it will last for too long.

Pros

  • Great for large cuts
  • Very sharp blade
  • Does not require much sharpening

Cons

  • Cheap  plastic handle
  • Doesn’t look too nice

4. F. Dick Butcher Knife

This is another moderately priced butcher knife which should get most jobs done with ease. It comes with a nice blade, a decent handle, and it does not cost too much, so it is a good choice for basic at home butchering.

Review

The F. Dick Butcher Knife features a pretty decent handle that we like. The reason we like the handle here is because it is ergonomically designed, well balanced, comfortable to hold, and it has a non-slip design to keep your fingers safe. It is a nice handle, but do keep in mind that it is made out of fairly cheap plastic, so while it is good to hold and use, it might not last all that long.

That said, it’s a great knife for basic and daily butchering needs, maybe not for a steakhouse or meat factory-type restaurant, but for at-home kitchen use no doubt. We like the high carbon count stainless steel blade, as it is fairly durable and has a decent cutting edge. It does not have the sharpest cutting edge, but it should be more than fine for basic use.

Pros

  • Comfortable and safe handle
  • Good for basic at home use
  • Strong blade and good cutting edge

Cons

  • Not ideal for prolonged use
  • Not the most durable handle

5. Rada Cutlery Old Fashioned Butcher Knife

We honestly don’t understand how this is the cheapest knife on this list, because it has a fantastic blade and is built to last for a very long time.

Review

For one, this butcher knife looks absolutely awesome, like something you would see in medieval times. It looks so neat because it has a brushed aluminum handle, which is not very common, but the silver color looks nice, plus the aluminum is very durable. It might be a bit smooth and slippery, especially when wet, but it’s not breaking anytime soon.

The same can be said for the very high-quality surgical grade T420 high carbon stainless steel. It’s quite the mouthful, but all those words equate to a very sharp and durable blade, a heavy 12-inch blade that should make quick work out of even the biggest of jobs.

Pros

  • Superior durability
  • Looks positively awesome
  • Great for even the biggest of jobs

Cons

  • Handle is a bit too smooth
  • Quite heavy

Conclusion

Personally we would recommend the Victorinox Swiss Army Butcher Knife as the No. 1 choice. The Swiss know what they’re doing when it comes to blades, and it really shows with this butcher knife. Now, if you want something a bit more cost effective, which also looks super cool, the Rada Cutlery Old Fashioned Butcher Knife is a fantastic choice to keep in mind.
